Alcestis

Alcestis was the daughter of Pelias, king of Iolcus, and either Anaxibia or Phylomache. Her father declared that she would marry the first man to yoke a lion and a boar to a chariot, and when King Admetus (with the help of Apollo) succeeded, he married her. Admetus was later cursed by Artemis, and Alcestis offered to sacrifice her own life in order to save her husband. Heracles then rescued Alcestis from Hades, as a token of appreciation for the hospitality of his friend Admetus.
