Atreus

Atreus was the son of King Pelops and Hippodamia. He and his twin brother Thyestes were both exiled by their father for murdering their half-brother Chrysippus in their desire for the throne of Olympia. They took refuge in Mycenae, and Atreus battled with his brother for the kingdom of Mycenae, which he eventually obtained through a trick. With his wife, Aerope, he had two sons, Agamemnon and Menelaus (collectively, his descendants are known as Atreidae). When he learned of Thyestes’ adultery with his own wife, he killed two of Thyestes’ sons, cooked them, and served them to him in a meal. In revenge, Atreus was himself later killed by Thyestes’ son, Aegisthus.
