Medea

Medea was the daughter of King Aeëtes of Colchis, as well as the niece of Circe and granddaughter of the sun god Helios. She is usually portrayed as an enchantress or witch. She met and married the hero Jason while he was in Colchis in search of the Golden Fleece, and it was only through her magical help that he succeeded in his quest. They returned together to Iolcus where Medea tricked King Pelias’ own daughters into killing him and they were forced to flee again, this time to Corinth. When Jason left Medea in order to further his political ambitions by marrying King Creon’s daughter Glauce, Medea took her revenge by poisoning both Glauce and Creon, and also her own two children with Jason. She was forced to flee again, first to Thebes and then to Athens, where she married King Aegeus, until her attempt to poison Aegeus’ long-lost son Theseus was exposed. Finally, she fled back to Colchis or, in some versions, to the wilds of the Iranian plateau, where she lived out her remaining years.
