Phaedra

Phaedra was the daughter of Minos, the mythical king of Crete, and Pasiphaë (and therefore a half-sister to the Cretan Minotaur). She married the hero Theseus, and became the mother of Demophon and Acamas. She fell madly in love with her step-son Hippolytus, Theseus’ son born by Antiope (or Hippolyta), queen of the Amazons. According to some sources, her lust for Hippolytus was a punishment by Aphrodite for Hippolytus’ spurning of her in favour of the worship of Artemis. In revenge for Hippolytus’ rejection, Phaedra claimed that Hippolytus had raped her, and the angry Theseus cursed him with one of the three curses he had received from Poseidon, resulting in Hippolytus’ death. Phaedra committed suicide out of guilt at letting her passions get the better of her.
