Dido
Dido (also known as Elissa in some accounts), was the beautiful daughter of a Phoenician king of Tyre, who made her and her brother Pygmalion his joint heirs. However, Pygmalion usurped the throne and Dido escaped (taking with her much of the wealth of her husband, Acerbas, whom Pygmalion had killed) to the North African coast where she founded the propserous new city of Carthage. According to legend, the Greek hero Aeneas stopped in Carthage on his return from the Trojan War, and had a passionate love affair with Dido. When Aeneas was forced to continue his voyage and fulfill his destiny, however, Dido killed herself with grief.
