Eteocles

Eteocles was the son of King Oedipus and Queen Jocasta of Thebes. When the disgraced Oedipus was expelled from Thebes, the throne was passed jointly to his two sons Eteocles and Polynices. However, because of a curse from their father that the brothers would die by each other's hands, they did not share the rule peacefully and, having gained the support of the Thebans, Eteocles expelled Polynices. The exiled Polynices gathered the support of the Argives and attacked Thebes (known as the Seven Against Thebes for the seven attacking commanders). Although Eteocles's forces were victorious, the brothers did in fact kill each other in single combat.
