Jason
Jason was the son of Alcimede and Aeson (the rightful king of Iolcus, who had been usurped by Aeson's half-brother, the power-hungry Pelias). In order to win back the throne, Jason accepted Pelias' challenge to bring back the Golden Fleece from Colchis, a quest for which he gathered a group of heroes (known as the Argonauts after their ship, the Argo), including Heracles, Philoctetes, Peleus, Telamon, Orpheus, Atalanta, Castor and Pollux. After a series of adventures, Jason succeeded in his quest, although not without the aid of the sorceress Medea (who had fallen in love with him), and returned together to Iolcus. However, when Medea killed Pelias, they were driven away from Iolcus, and settled in Corinth. There, Jason became engaged to marry Glauce, a daughter of King Creon of Corinth, to strengthen his political ties, and the enraged Medea killed both Glauce and Creon as well as her own two children by Jason. Having lost his favour with Hera for breaking his vows to Medea, Jason died lonely and unhappy, crushed by the stern of the rotting Argo.
