Penelope
Penelope was the daughter of Icarius of Sparta and his wife Periboea. Odysseus beat the champion runner Icarius in a foot-race, and was thereby allowed to marry Penelope. She bore Odysseus one son, Telemachus, who was born just before Odysseus was called to fight in the Trojan War. During the twenty years her husband was away (ten years of war and ten years of wandering), she had a hard time snubbing marriage proposals from a large number of odious suitors, who claimed that Odysseus must be dead. But she remained faithful and, when Odysseus did return, she arranged an archery contest using a bow that only Odysseus could use, and thus won back her husband. According to some legends, after Odysseus' death, Penelope married Telegonus, Odysseus' son by Circe.
