Semele

Semele was the daughter of Cadmus, the mythical founder of Thebes, and Harmonia, the goddess of harmony and concord. She was the mortal mother of Dionysus by Zeus (other myths attribute Dionysus with two mothers, Persephone and Semele). Zeus' wife Hera, jealous of his affair with Semele, encouraged Semele to make Zeus reveal himself to her in all his divine glory, knowing that a mortal could never live through such an experience, and she perished, consumed by lightning (although Dionysus was saved). When he grew up, Dionysus rescued his mother from Hades, and she became a goddess on Mount Olympus, with the new name Thyone.
