Dragon With Fur: The Tale of A Flying Lizard

Mythology

Dragons with fur are popular in ancient mythology among Asian countries. The mythology narrates such dragons to be very powerful and strong yet have a humble and friendly nature. Many stories about dragons are present in history but their authenticity is very questionable. Here we bring you all the information on dragons with fur from the well-reputed sources.

Dragons With Fur

Dragons are mythological characters that appear in many mythologies around the world. They have been very popular among western as well as eastern cultures. The stories related to dragons are mostly heroic in nature. According to scholars, the closest resemblance to dragons in the real world is dinosaurs and, according to some sources, crocodiles.

Very different types of dragons exist in various mythologies today. The dragons of the Eastern cultures are totally unrelated to the dragons present in Western cultures and rightfully so. But they all have some characteristic similarities between them.

The basic characteristics of the dragons are that they:

  • Breathe and spit fire

  • Can fly because they have wings

  • Can have horns

  • Live a life of solitude, away from humans and other creatures

  • Have huge and long snake-like bodies

  • Are warm-blooded and lay offspring from eggs

  • Might have scaled bodies

  • Might have a venomous stinger at the end of their tail

  • Might be controlled by some entity otherwise are free-willed

  • Live on the top of the mountains while some dragons might live underwater as well

  • Can be ridden by creatures that pose no threat to them

  • Can be masters of alchemy and arcane knowledge

  • Can possess ultimate power and strength

  • Can bring good luck and prosperity

Dragons are the central characters in many stories and movies. Each type of story or movie portrays dragons in different natures and with different characters. Some are fierce and some are very helpful. The one thing that is common in all the types of dragons is their size which is always huge.

Types of Dragons

Dragons are of many types. These types can be based upon their origin story, fur type, body size, fire-spitting abilities, and many more. Dragons are not the friendliest in nature but can become friendly if they sense that the person means them no harm. Because in many cultures, dragons are thought to be a man’s friend and ally.

Other than movies and stories, many ancient mythologies and cultures firmly believe in the existence of dragons. The very first time a dragon was introduced to this world was through ancient Mesopotamian scriptures and texts. These texts talked about a fire-breathing creature in the mountains and it was the biggest creature that anybody had seen.

Eastern Dragons

The most famous Eastern countries that have dragons in their cultures are China, Japan, Vietnam and Korea. These countries form the majority of the Eastern part of the world. The Easterners firmly believe that the dragons existed in the world once and now they exist only in the spirit world and visit the Earth when called upon. Among these countries, Chinese dragons culture is most involved with the draconian creatures.

Long, Lung or Loong are all names of the Chinese dragon. The Chinese dragon exists in many forms and shapes. It may take the shape of a very common animal like a turtle to mask his true identity for safety purposes. Loong is known to have great strength and power. They have particular control over the water bodies, typhoons, rainfall and floods.

Famously, the Chinese culture has fur dragons over the scaled dragons. Fur dragons are known to have a very airy and breezy existence. They don’t stay at one location for a longer time and do not necessarily have any friends too.

Nine Features of Chinese Dragons

Chinese dragon

According to the Han Dynasty of China, dragons have characteristics of nine different animals.

The nine characteristics that make up a dragon are the eyes of a rabbit, antlers of a deer, the mouth of a cow, the head of a camel, the body of a snake, the belly of a shellfish, the scales of a fish, the claws of an eagle, and the paws of a tiger.

In some instances, the scales of a fish are changed to the fur of any mammal.

Western Dragons

Western cultures portray dragons very differently than Eastern cultures. We know that the concept of Dragons came from ancient Mesopotamian cultures. The Mesopotamians were one of the earliest civilizations on the planet and were very articulate through their clay tablets and scriptures.

The Iranian and Persian cultures also have dragons. The Zoroastrians call them Azhi Dahaka. The oldest book of the Indians was the Rigveda which narrates many stories including dragons. The Indian gods are seen to be defeating and fighting the dragons to save their lands and cattle.

The ancient Greek and Roman cultures also have some references to draconian creatures. Hesiod, Virgil, and Agamemnon are some of the poets that narrate draconian creatures in their poems. Heroes like Heracles and Zeus fight and slay creatures that look like dragons or are dragons themselves.

Historians sometimes compare dragons with dinosaurs. We know that dinosaurs existed before humans and walked on this planet. The dinosaurs became extinct and later, human life began. It is thought that perhaps primitive humans came up with the concept of dragons from the remnants of the dinosaurs.
