Norse Weekdays
The table below shows that the names of the days of the week that we are most familiar with were mostly derived from the names of Germanic gods and goddesses. I only have the names of Anglo-Saxon (Old English) days listed.
Only Sunday, Monday and Saturday have retained their Roman names. For comparison purposes, I have included the Roman days in the last column.
Days | German's Days | Anglo-Saxon Days | Roman Days |
Sunday | sunnuntag | sunnandæg | dies solis (Sol's day) |
Monday |
| monandæg | dies lunae (Luna's day) |
Tuesday | týsdagr (Tiwaz's day) | Tiwesdæg | dies Martis (Mars' day) |
Wednesday | (Wodan's day) | Wodnesdæg | dies Mercurii (Mercury's day) |
Thursday | (Thor's day) | Thursdæg | dies Iovis (Jupiter's day) |
Friday | friatag (Frija's day) | frigedæg | dies Veneris (Venus' day) |
Saturday |
| Sæternesdæg | dies Saturni (Saturn's day) |
