Aeolids 1 (Thessaly & Messenia)

The Aeolids, or the descendants of Aeolus, ruled many different kingdoms throughout Greece. Aeolus, the king of Phthia in Thessaly, had many children. Some of his sons founded their own kingdoms, while others gained their own kingdoms through marriage to the daughter of a king.

Since the Aeolids were so widely dispersed, I have decided to display them in separate family trees for each important line, depending on the geographic location of their kingdoms.

Since Aeolus was the son of Hellen and grandson of Deucalion, the survivor of the Deluge (Flood), the first family tree displays all the children of Deucalion, Hellen and Aeolus.

All descendants of Deucalion, including the Aeolids, were known as the Deucalionids. His descendants became the eponym of many races, as can be seen in the table below.

Below are the family trees of mainly the kingdoms in Thessaly, and some in Messenia. However, there were many kingdoms in Thessaly ruled by the Aeolids, such as that of Phthia, Iolcus, Pheres and Phylace.

  • Descendants of Deucalion (Deucalionids)

  • Houses of Thessaly and Messenia (Aeolids)

There are many genealogies of the Aeolids, found on different pages on Timeless Myths.

  • House of Corinth (Sisyphus' line), see Aeolids 2

  • House of Orchomenus (Athamas' line), see Aeolids 2

  • House of Argos (descendants of Melamphus), see House of Argos (Proëtids)

  • House of Messenia (Perieres' line), see House of Sparta

  • House of Elis

  • House of Calydon

Descendants of Deucalion (Deucalionids)

Epimetheus (Titan) Prometheus (Titan) Pandora ("the gift of all") Deucalion (king of Phthia) Pyrrha Hellen (king of Phthia) Xuthus (king of Thessaly) Creüsa (daughter of Erechtheus of Athens) Ion (eponym of the Ionians) Erechtheus (king of Athens) Cranaus (king of Athens) Amphictyon (king of Athens) Enarete (wife of Aeolus) Protogeneia (mistress of Aeolus) Aeolus (king of Thessaly) Salmoneus (king of Salmonia, Elis) Tyro Cretheus (king of Iolcus) Sidero (stepmother of Tyro) Perieres (king of Messenia) Gorgophone (daughter of Perseus) Sisyphus (king of Corinth) Athamas (king of Orchomenus) Perimele (mother of Hippodamas and Orestes) Aëthlius (king of Elis) Calyce (wife of Aëthlius of Elis) Peisidice (wife of Myrmidon of Phthia) Macareus Canace Alcyone Ceyx (king of Trachis) Endymion (king of Elis) Paeon (king of Paeonia) Epeius (king of Elis) Eurycyda (mother of Eleius) Aetolus (king of Aetolia) Autolycus (master thief) Phorbas (king of Thessaly) Otus (twin giant) Ephialtes (twin giant) Deion (king of Phocis) Erysichthon Mestra Tectamus (king of Crete)

I have not shown the descendants of the Aeolids in great detail here, except for the descendants of Canace. Canace was the daughter of Aeolus.

Houses of Thessaly and Messenia (Aeolids)

Xuthus (king of Thessaly) Aeolus (king of Thessaly) Enarete (wife of Aeolus) Tyro Sidero (stepmother of Tyro) Salmoneus (king of Salmonia, Elis) Cretheus (king of Iolcus) Pelias (king of Iolcus) Acastus (king of Iolcus) Neleus (king of Pylos) Chloris (daughter of Amphion and Niobe) Pero Nestor (king of Pylos) Amythaon Melampus (Aeolid seer) Bias Perieres (king of Messenia) Gorgophone (daughter of Perseus and Andromeda) Aeson Jason (leader of the Argonauts) Medea (Colchis sorceress) Pheres (king of Pheres) Alcestis Admetus (king of Pherae) Deion (king of Phocis) Phylacus (king of Phylace) Iphiclus (king of Phylace) Protesilaus (king of Phylace) Iasus (king of Arcadia) Atalanta (huntress) Procris (daughter of Erechtheus of Athens) Perimela (wife of Antion, the Lapith) Aeolia (wife of Calydon) Meleager (Calydonian hero) Leucippus (king of Messenia) Aphareus (king of Messenia) Arene (daughter of Oebalus) Cephalus Arceisius Telemachus (son of Odysseus and Penelope) Idas Lynceus Perseus (king of Tiryns and Mycenae) Andromeda (daughter of Cepheus and Cassiopea)

This family tree shows the complete family tree of those who ruled in Iolcus from Thessaly and Pylos in Messenia; both lines were descendants of Tyro, granddaughter of Aeolus. This genealogy also shows the descendants of Cretheus, Salmoneus and Deïon, the three sons of Aeolus. Because of lack of space, the line of Deïon is not complete. For example, Cephalus, Deïon's son, was the ancestor of Odysseus.

It should be noted that Jason had two sons by Hypsipyle, queen of Lemnos.
